Waiting for the time when we’re recognized and celebrated as good enough.

In this day in age we post videos on YouTube, tweet our experiences, track the views, monitor the comments, and hope for recognition. Or worst yet we never post that video or that lesson because we haven’t been recognized as being “good enough”. I’m here to tell you that’s a lie, that’s a myth, and that’s what is holding all of us back! Recognition does not quantify our worth and waiting for it will suck our lives of creativity and rob this world of what we have to offer.

Bass playing, music creation, artistry, and the whole of life for that matter is made up of the moments between recognition and celebration…those are the moments of growth and production. Where inspiration meets implementation!

We are all created, and in turn we are all creators. We don’t have to, and shouldn’t, wait for the celebration of our peers. It is ingrained in us to create and that’s exactly what we need and exactly what this world needs.

Am I the best bass player in the world? Nope. Am I even the best bass player that I know? Nope. Heck, I’m not even the best musician in my household. Does that say anything about my ability to offer some beautiful creation? Nope!

When it comes to bass playing you may know everything I know and you may be better at it than I ever will be…but you have not shared my life experiences and I have not shared yours. In that alone it’s easy to see that we can share and learn from one another.

So keep creating, keep stretching, keep experiencing the little moments, and keep sharing! Their desire was to employ me
to simply interpret their music visually. It would be difficult to not to involve my
personal interpretation so I thank them dearly for that freedom.
The Pinwheel: The pinwheel is us. We’re not invisible, we’re not undesireable,
we’re bright and strong. We’re not misfits in the unfortunate way, but beautiful
strange misfits. As an artist and a believer, I was struck by these words of Beckon
Q’s song, “Your Chance”. I couldn’t stray away from this concept of a strange but
colorful object–with all of its detail of life’s characteristics rendered through tiny
icons. The illustration was created digitally through photography and small shapes,
each painstakingly placed to create movement and emotive flow. This kind of
illustration is therapeutic and exciting at the same time.
The back image of the pinwheel takes the concept to God’s perspective. If we
are these unique but beautiful pinwheels, what does it look like in our weakest
moments, when we’re shattered and destroyed? My answer is in the image: God
sees us with all of the same beautiful detail, the love isn’t wained, and we remain
art ready to be hung in a gallery. We are not a mistake, there is a reason.
Brandon Hill
bhilldesign.com

Lifest. Oshkosh, WI

Ever heard of it? A fine little town all on it's own I guess, but what made it extra special thus summer was a little fairgrounds called Sunnyview, the site of Lifest 2009.
Trip bio:
We rented a Zipcar (check em out www.Zipcar.com) to fit all of our gear in as we headed out of Chicago on Wednesday night. The five of us settled in for the 3 hour and change drive up north.
After a couple stops for food and coffee, we pulled into our hotel around 12:30 am. Did we all 5 sleep in one room? Umm heck yes we did! Poor Becky is all I can say with us crazy cats she had to deal with. Who did I cuddle with all night? None other than our little elec. rocker Scotty. It was right nice. :)
In the AM we got our coffee fix on and headed to the great fairgrounds. We got there around 8am and got all of our gear loaded in and jammed a quick sound check. Meanwhile, campers lined up for the showers. Quite a sight to see.
We had three sets that day and we felt good about rocking each one of them. It was a great venue and really cool to meet some if out Twitter followers at the show. (hi Kendra)
We debuted a new tee that weekend and I think it was a hit because that's all people bought! I guess we'll have to out our ok'd shirts on sale huh? :)

On another note, sorry to be MIA on the blog as of late! We began playing it years ago and have loved it. Particular memories that stand out:

1. 4 yrs ago: Opening for Howie Day and The Afters. A flood of screaming teens flooded the stage on a hot and sunny day. We met our original drummer, Ricky, at this show. He loved our music and asked to join instantly!
2. 2 yrs ago: Rain poured down on the Park Grill hours before load in/sound check. And miraculously the clouds cleared just in time for the bands to get gear on stage. The show went on and we had a blast with the survivors who braved the weather.
3. 1 yr ago: Hot, muggy Chicago weather caused Luke’s acoustic guitar string to break during our set. We learned to improvise on the spot while he quick switched it out. Seamless. Beautiful.
4. This year? We have some surprises up our sleeves! Help make memories with us at the show this THURSDAY at 4pm at the Park Grill underneath the Bean in Chicago’s downtown.

See you there!

Becky
www.BeckonQ.com

Music Fuel

From the day that I could walk or move music has always been the
forced that has fueled my life.
It was the reason I went to high school, college, and now going back
to school to become a better musician and someday a teacher.
I have never wanted anything more than to be a musicians playing shows
and making people groove like they would never groove before. That's
why i became a drummer I feel like no one makes or breaks the groove
like a drummer, I grew up watching many great drummers such as
Beauford, Rich, and Barker and from day one I was amazed. Me being a
very soft spoken person drums allow me to express myself in ways that
I feel only other people who love and appreciate music can understand.
I have always felt that musicians are storytellers who speak a very
unique and special language, and that the only way to understand this
language is to open up your mind, hearts, and ears in ways you have
never done before to follow the story. Every song written, every note
played, every lyric sung, and every drum hit is a part of this story
and to miss it is to miss something unique and special in itself.
Which brings me to Beckon Q what story does our music tell? I think
our music tells a story of hope, determination, and no matter what you
do, who you are, and what society may say you can succeed.

I love the vibe we have as a band, I love the instant chemistry we
have had every since I joined the band, I even love how hot we all
look on stage because y'all all know we do. But the thing I love the
best about this band is the fact that our songs are uplifting, the
tell the story of hope, and they encourage people. We are not just
trying to be famous, make a lot of money, and act like there is
nothing else going on around us. We are also trying to promote hope,
being subjects of change, and show that you can have fun onstage and
still stand for something. So here is what i propose next time you
come to a Beckon Q show listen to our music in a different way, let
each song really be heard by your hearts. Then find one of us and tell
us what story was being told for you on the night, because I can
guarantee everyone's story and hearts will be different.

Chris

Campaign No Day Job: Part 2

What do you want to be when you grow up?

If you could do anything in the world as a career, what would it be?

As kids, our imagination is a part of us from the start. We did nothing to create it. It just was. I remember my imagination being so tangible, I felt like I could reach out and touch my dreams. That if I jumped, I really could fly. I really could be Rupunzel and through my bedroom window my prince would come to rescue me. But at a certain age, that imagination began to disappear. Why? I’m not completely sure. About the time when my childlike self started getting taller and taller, my imagination dwindled. And now I strain to rekindle it. I envy adults like Gordon MacKenzie, author of Orbiting the Giant Hairball, whose imagination is alive and beautiful. Grown up MacKenzie used his imagination as a vital part of his career at Hallmark. His imagination is a part of him, and has not disappeared.

I believe what caused this diminishing imagination for me was when I started to get bad grades in Math and History, and developed the notion that I’m not good enough. I needed to pass these classes to be valued in this world. Do you ever feel that way? Like you have to be great at a multitude of things in order to be great? I do.

But what about the few things that you love to do and are great at? Maybe you have a mind for marketing. You love coming up with creative ideas that will help promote a product. Or you love writing. All you want to do is write and inspire.

In my humble opinion, it’s time to begin putting all of ourselves into what we do best, and most importantly, what we love to do. For me, it’s songwriting and singing. I want to do this as much as I possibly can. I want it to be my career. As a band, Beckon Q wants to be able to put aside all of the extras in life, things that aren’t our strengths, to focus on what we do best… making music, getting to know our fans, and engage in community with you.

What do you love to do? What makes you come alive? Tell us.

I dare you to dream big!

Peace and love,
Becky

Beckon Q

I am a music fan

I am a music fan. Sometimes I wish I hadn’t become a musician because
I love music so much. Nowadays I get so wrapped up in production and
all the goodies that go along with the music business that I forget
about the music. My iTunes is filled with such a huge variety of
genres. If it’s good to my ear then it’s just good. I remember back
when I was a kid my dad would play bands like Journey and Supertramp
and my mom was a big fan of The Beatles and The Monkees. I remember
listening to Prince’s Purple Rain and Madonna’s Like A Virgin with my
cousins. When I started finding my own musical influences it came in
the form of what is known as grunge. To this day my fave bands are
Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and Nirvana. Later on bands
like Foo Fighters, Filter, Incubus and Dashboard Confessional were
added to the list. I can go a lil country with Keith Urban, a lil pop
with Justin Timberlake and a lil hip hop with JayZ.

The most intriguing performance ever came from a guy named Butch
Walker. I was at the Hard Rock Hotel in Chicago with Escape From
Earth who opened for Butch. I wasn’t really interested at all. I
actually sat on the couch in the lobby and listened and never even saw
him playing. All I know is that he had captured me with acoustic and
voice that night and the rest is history. I go to all his shows. I
have all his records, his old stuff with Marvelous 3, and a bunch of
the artists that he has written and recorded with. Butch Walker is a
genius. All it took was that one night and I was hooked.

I’m guessing that maybe some of you have had this experience… maybe
even while listening to BECKON Q. I just want you guys to know that I
love music and put all my heart and soul into creating something new
or putting forth my best efforts to enhance songs that already exist.
My hope is that we can put a smile on our fan’s faces, provide a
little bit of an escape, cure whatever might be illing you, and just
have the time of our lives together!!

XOXO
Scotty

City band. City matters...

We’re an “urban” band…well…kind of. Here’s why kinda:

We live in the city, we play shows in the city, we pay city taxes, we share small places, we have to pay to park…EVERYWHERE, we ride the el, we ride buses, we run into a homeless person every time we step onto the street.

We also have the world at our fingertips, ever heard of Starbucks, I can be at one of 7 of them faster than you’ll finish reading this. We also all didn’t grow up in the city, we’re transfers in. That means we’re either crazy, or we have the means to make it work. (the latter is the truth). We care about the city and thrive on it, that much is true, but do you?

2008 was the first year that the world population lived in cities more than rural areas.

Cities matter. They are influential hubs, but they are also destitute and more urban dwellers than not have quite a different view of city than Beckon Q does.

Check out this site: www.theplaceswelive.com

We hope it makes you think and inspires you. We like to think we do...

Recently, I did a little presentation for an MBA class I'm taking at DePaul University in Chicago on new ideas. Some other colleagues in the class participated as well...Mike, Stephanie, Erin, Alejandra. The presentation centered around the book: Myths of Innovation, ch. 4 by Scott Berkun.

My wonderful Prof. Dr. L. I did and here's what Scott had to say about it: http://www.scottberkun.com/blog/2009/myths-of-innovation-the-movie/

and here's the vid...

That's my little story.

How do your ideas apply to how you listen to music? While you may see us kicking it on stage at Schubas, Cubby Bear or The Frequency, we, like lots of unsigned bands have day jobs.

I’d like to invite you into my head for just a little bit. Let’s chat about commutes. I’ve recently accepted the awesomest job in the world, singing and coordinating bands at Willow Creek Community Church in South Barrington. However, where do I live? East Lakeview, neighborhood of Chicago. So I spend a good 30 minutes each way five days a week driving down Addison in order to pick up the highway that sweeps me away to a land far far away. Farther than IKEA.

On my drive down Addison, I see the same sights and feel familiar pot holes. I see Julius Meinl on the corner of Southport and Addison. And every time this same thought goes through my head, “People say that place is really good. I should go there sometime.” Do you realize that same thought passes through my head 10 times every week?

I pass two Dunkin Donuts: one on the corner of Lincoln Ave and near Elston. I think… “mmmm, hazelnut coffee. Should I stop? No. That defeats all the time I just spent racing down Addison.”

As I gain speed down Addison at Ashland, my eyes quickly check gas prices on both sides, at Citgo and Shell to compare which is better… then I laugh to myself and think, “Ha! I’ll just get gas in Barrington. Soooo much cheaper.”

On the way home, when I see this Wrigley Field

I know, home is awaiting my soon return. And that’s where my guitar and laptop sit, waiting for me.

So now it’s your turn. Whether or not you are a Chicagoan… share with us!
- From where to where do you travel during the week?
- What catches your eye, and what runs through your head?
- Do you recommend I try Julius Meinl?

Peace and love,

Becky of Beckon Q

We got hacked!

What a day...how'd yours start? Friend us. Then tell your friends to friend us. Then tell them to tell their friends to friend us, then...well, you get the idea.

We miss our friends, but we know that we're still friends even if it doesn't say so on silly myspace.

Here's to tomorrow morning...

Luke
Beckon Q

A new year to fall in love....

I fell in love again today. Maybe it's the season. Family, friends, food. Through the snow and ice, there's new life. New life to live, to share. Maybe I'm just extra sentimental because of something I ate. Regardless, I fell in love again today.

It's the simplest thing really. You're sitting on the floor at the foot of your bed with you laptop and guitar, 1 pick, 1 capo, no tuner, no socks, no distractions and it happens.

Practicing...but not really practicing to get anywhere. Checking out guitar tabs online for fun, writing new tunes and I stumble across some old favorites and just dive deeper in love again. Was it St. Patricks Day by John Mayer? Was it the idea of you, dreamgirl, or steady as we go by DMB? Maybe it was the new tunes I'm working on....regardless...

I fell in love with music again today.

Do you remember what that's like? Have you slowed down enough, really stopped to experience that moment in your life a long time ago when you listened to music because you couldn't NOT listen to it?

This new year, this 2009, take some time to fall in love with the music that really moves you, that really carries you. I doubt you'll regret it. Who knows, maybe Beckon Q can deliver that chance to fall in love again for you. I truly hope so.

All of the peace, all of the love, and all of the good things life can bring to you.

Luke
Beckon Q

Why I love music...

Hi everyone!
I was asked by a fellow band mate to write on why I love music and what music means to me. So here goes…

My love affair with music started when I was a little bitty girl singing in the church choir. I was so nervous singing Silent Night in front of a silent attentive crowd. I remember catching myself as I scrunched the side of my dress up in my hand as I held the mic in the other. But even though I had nerves, I loved it. I wanted to do it again, and again, and again.

In high school I decided, much like Luke, to teach myself guitar. It took quite a bit of dedication to learn this foreign instrument. After crossing that beginner’s hurdle, songs started flowing out. Many were full of teen angst and heartbreak but as many artists would say, the best songs are written out of raw emotion. And teenage years are full of raw emotion!

I believe there’s magic in what music does. It tells stories in ways that words alone cannot. If created with sensitivity and thought, music allows you to enter into what the artist is trying to share, linking us together in a mysterious fashion.

My soul sings because that’s all it desires to do. As lungs fill with air without us thinking about it, so my soul sings. I hope that is what you hear when listening to Beckon Q… our heart, our thoughts, our souls when you listen to these songs.

Peace and love,

Becky

Northbrook baby!

Why does it always snow in Northbrook?

I think it's so it makes it extra special to cuddle up with friends, drink coffee, and enjoy a cold snowy night the best way us BQers know how to...

Here's a sample of the evening...enjoy!

Shirts, shirts, and well...just two shirts

Did you know that we now have shirts for sale? This place is great. Check it out here: www.venueartandwine.com

Some good friends of ours, Jeff and Julia Woods (www.jwportraitlife.com...the photographers that took all of our pics...) started this idea, then handed it over to 2 very fine ladies, Steph and Tiff to complete. (i think=) In any case, we dug the space tons. Now, no offense to Washington, IL, but it's not exactly what you'd think of when you think of hip, fun, trendy, cool...yet Venue is just that. The evening featured scultor artist Bob Emser, acoustic music compliments of yours truly, and a wine and beer menu that was something to boast about!

Hopefully some of the folk from Washington, IL will remember us and we can hit up the small town sometime in the future full-band...we'd love to.

Peace, love, and all good things.
Luke
Beckon Q

down time

the is what happens when Beckon Q isn't playing music.
we pretend to play music.
Nate and I can beat Becky any day of the week.
Jury's still out with Scotty and Chris...

see my bro dan back there on the kit. he's nice.
(Chris couldn't make this gig...)

peace....OUT!
lq
bq

Magic show

That might be what our new gig will be, a magic show. We were all really really clicking on Thursday and you could just tell, this is it.

I can't even begin to talk about what happened to Overboard, Stay Here and Reason Why, and I certainly don't want to spoil anything...=)

For now, just know that Becky, Nate, Scotty, Chris and I, well...we're looking forward to the coming journey and hope you enjoy the ride...

Peace, love, and all good things, always and forever...
Luke
Beckon Q

Remember how sometimes you just mess up?

Well, maybe you don't, but I do. Often.
Like there was one time, when I was a kid and I had a pet rabbit (named Petey) when I left his cage door open overnight. ....Petey wasn't there in the morning anymore, but I could have sworn I saw him in the woods by our house a couple of months later!

Then there are other times that I mess up too...

Like with my friends. on this blog. because I do things too fast without thinking. (am I the only one!?)

Well I messed up big time because I was writing to you all here on a previous blog, looking forward to our practice time that was up and coming...and I completely forgot to mention our famed guitar player SCOTT DALHEIM!!! What was I thinking????

Yeah, go ahead Luke and leave out the person with the MOST experience in the entire group, the person who knows more people in the music world than the rest of us combined. The one with the most style points by far (thx: TOMS, trues, VOX, fender, etc, etc). The one who gives up his own time for no money to come make Beckon Q better than Beckon Q would be. Wow.

Who would forget this?

Me.

Scotty, I'm calling it out for all the world to see because I know you wouldn't even say or think anything about it, but man, I'm bummed it happened.

So, for the rest of you, isn't it nice to see this blog-hug that I'm givin Scott? Give him one too. Shoot a comment out and keep it rollin.

Can't wait to jam tonight. The duet (Becky and I) are going to spend some acoustic time together while the real fire jams (Scott, Nate, Chris) and then we'll wrap it all up with some together time at the end...should be fun!

Talk to you later.
Luke
BQ

practice makes perfect...

should we record our rehearsals? probably. they're hilarious! not to mention, SO much great stuff comes from them...

we're actually rehearsing Thursday night and I can't wait. That we did.

It started out with a little stroll from my place to Nate's...gotta love living within walking distance to one another...I picked up some "Joy's Noodles" on the way. Try it, you'll like it. No doubt. Chicken coconut curry for Nate, straight up Pad Thai for yours truly. so good...

we rocked out the noodles as we listened to some tunes by "star" while we ate, caught up on life, talked about Becky (how good she is of course...) then pulled out some axes and went to town.

No secrets being shared just yet, but I will say we've got some surprises in store for everyone in the coming days, weeks, and months... Nate and I worked on some of them, if you know where our myspace is, you should be able to find some of them...but then we just plain played some notes (over and over again in a really fun pattern that sounds pretty decent and you'll just have to wait and see)

wow, we just can't play enough. it was great to live it up with Nate. truly the man of the century. do you know Nate? really? have you met him? do it, you won't regret it...

maybe he'll hug you. those are nice.
his bass is nice
goes well with noodles.

Cheers.
Luke

Cubby Bear

Cubs fans? No problem though, you just probably didn't know that you could still watch Shawn Johnson AND come to the show, right? That's who you are in the summer. You're a blogger? Well, you are if you ever want to finally get on the ball with this blogging thing and post some love for all to see! That is exactly what we intend to do. Right here, right now. Believe it.

This past saturday we had the wonderful opportunity to sweat our faces off and play our hearts out at the taste of chicago thanks to Bill Covert of Sarah Vanderhaar and the good folks at Best Buy. Thanks much to the both! We had a great time. Met some great folk and afterwards, ate some great food. (three cheers for turkey leg all over Nate's face!)

Our fearless first drummer Ricky joined us for the 90 minute set and didn't miss a beat (clever eh?). additionally, for the first time ever, we had Josh Katt on the electric guitar. we think he did a swell job. it's not easy jumping in with us picky persnickety folk and delivering, but that he did.

the day went so well in fact that we invite you to check out your local best buy store or bestbuy.com in the coming months and look for our debut album "Your Chance"! It'll be available soon there! Of course, you can always pick it up on our website at the "store" page too!

peace, love, and all good things.
Beckon Q
